Queen Elizabeth I's anniversary

Queen Elizabeth I's anniversary
(17 November)
The anniversary of Queen Elizabeth I's accession to the throne in 1558 was previously an important date in the Protestant festival calendar, and was used well into the 18th century as a way of propagating the Protestant faith and denigrating the Roman Catholic Church. Parades and processions took place on the day, anti-popery sermons were preached, and bonfires and effigies, similar to those of *November the Fifth, were much in evidence.
